Our Story

How it all started...

Parkway Church on the Mountain is affiliated with The Wesleyan Church.

The name "Wesleyan" is in honor of John Wesley, a priest of the Church of England. It was his discipline of spiritual devotion which earned him the nickname, "Methodist" in 1735.

The Methodist Episcopal Church refused to reform their view on slavery, so in 1843, a group broke away from the church and called themselves "Wesleyan Methodists." In 1966, the church merged with the Alliance of Reformed Baptists and in 1968, it merged with the Pilgrim Holiness Church and became "Wesleyan."

The church we call Parkway began in the Higgins Home. In February of 1927, six families purchased land on the corner of 18th street and Tazewell Avenue in Roanoke. This small congregation was called, "The Second Wesleyan Methodist Church."

Expanding the vision...

By February of 1987, the congregation had grown to 75 members, and they moved their location to 3230 King Street. In August of 1989, they brought John Ott to pastor the church. The congregation continued to grow, and in 1995, they sought to purchase the property on Mexico Way. Eleven years later, in the spring of 2006, Parkway moved into "the Church on the Mountain."
